Q.3 - Is there a lot of administration work?

If you are paying for your employee’s health insurance we have developed a range of services to keep your group scheme administration to a minimum.

Employee’s health insurance

If you are offering health insurance to your employees then here are some of the administration services we can offer you:

  • Online joining for new members:
This means no more paperwork for you. Just direct your new employees to our website and they can join your group scheme online. You still maintain approval so no one will be added to your group scheme without your say so.
  • A wide choice of payment options:
Including an option to pay on a monthly basis by direct debit. If you pay by instalments a credit charge will apply, however if you choose to pay annually you will not incur this charge.

If an employee chooses to increase their cover over that offered by the company, then the extra subscriptions can be collected from the employee directly. No more extra work for you and certainty of cover for the employee.

Secure online access to your group scheme details. Through the QUINN-healthcare website you can:

  • View a list of all the members on your group scheme

Q.4 - What other issues should I consider if I am paying for my staff’s health insurance?

If you are paying for some or all of your staff’s health insurance there are some other things to consider:

  • As you are offering health insurance as a benefit to your staff, employees will be liable for tax on this benefit. However, because of the tax relief that is available for health insurance, the tax relief received reduces the tax paid on the benefit. This makes paying an employees health insurance premium more attractive than paying them the same amount in salary.

  • All QUINN-healthcare subscriptions are shown net of the standard rate of income tax (currently 20%). This means that if you are paying for your employee’s health insurance, a payment, equal to 20% of the gross premium, must be made to the Revenue Commissioners at the end of your financial year. This is the case for all health insurance companies in Ireland.

  • Your QUINN-healthcare group scheme payments are a tax-deductible expense for the company.

  • With effect from 1st January 2004, PRSI is due on all employee benefits including health insurance. This means that the employer will pay PRSI if they are paying for health insurance as a benefit.

  • However, offering health insurance as a benefit still has many advantages for your employees including a lower tax charge than most other employee benefits and quicker back to work times when your employees fall ill.

For more information on these issues, you can contact the Revenue Commissioners or visit their website, www.revenue.ie.
