Gráinne Seoige, today (Monday, 14th April 2008) launched details for this year’s People of the Year Awards. The RTÉ presenter was accompanied by previous winners, Ger Killeen (11) and Ciara McMahon (12).
Sponsored by QUINN-healthcare, organised by Rehab, and televised live by RTÉ, the Awards provide a unique opportunity for the Irish public to honour outstanding contributions made by individuals and organisations to life in Ireland.
There are twelve categories this year as part of the Awards. The winners are chosen by members of the public through a nominations process and finalised by a panel of adjudicators comprising leading members of the media, business, public service and community sectors.
The Awards include the Irish Person of the Year, the International Person of the Year and the Young Irish Person of the Year (under 25 years of age). In addition, there are a number of People of the Year Awards presented for achievements in the area of community service, arts and culture, sports and public sector achievement, among others.
Do you know someone whose achievements have made a positive impact in their local community or on a national or international level?
If so, nominations for the Awards can be submitted online at www.peopleoftheyear.com.
Alternatively, nomination forms are available from Rehab Group, Roslyn Park, Sandymount, Dublin 4 or by telephoning (01) 205 7200. Entries can also be submitted by emailing poy@quinn-healthcare.com. “This is QUINN-healthcare’s second year working with the People of the Year Awards and we are delighted to call on all those who admire the work of any individual who has achieved extraordinary things ¬– whether their neighbour, colleague, friend or a public figure ¬– to nominate that person or group for an award. Communities all over Ireland benefit from the great work of unsung heroes – ordinary people who do extraordinary things, and we want to recognise the achievement of these individuals at the People of the Year Awards.”
“This is the 34th year of the People of the Year Awards, which are a household name, and Rehab is proud to have established the awards and been the organiser for over three decades. The People of the Year Awards provide us with an opportunity to give real recognition to people whose achievements and stories lift and inspire us all. People can be nominated for great achievement in community work, as a member of the public service, in international work or as someone whose achievement is across many areas. There is a special category for young people aged under 25. ”
“This is RTÉ’s 25th year to televise the People of the Year Awards, and my second as presenter. I am delighted to play a role, alongside our colleagues in QUINN- healthcare and Rehab, in bringing the stories of these outstanding individuals and their achievements to as wide an audience as possible.”
Past winners of the People of the Year Awards include Sir Bob Geldof; Padraig Harrington; Mary Robinson; Terry Wogan; Veronica Guerin; Mo Mowlam; Maeve Binchy; Sonia O’Sullivan; TK Whittaker; Tommy Tiernan and Christy Moore.
